Bad breath, or halitosis, is a common problem and can be embarrassing at times. But fear not, it can definitely be overcomed.

Bad breath can be caused by hormonal fluctuations which lead to changes in the saliva and increases the amount of bacteria in the mouth. Because of this, women are more likely to have bad breath just before a period. Some other causes of bad breath are retained food particles, gum diseases, chronic sinus problems and even lung or stomach diseases.

Bad breath can be reduced and even prevented by:

- Regular brushing of the teeth, gums and tongue

- Flossing daily

- Cleaning of the tongue (either brushing with a toothbrush or with the use of a tongue scraper)

- Drinking plenty of water

- Cleaning your mouth after eating or drinking milk products, fish or meat

- Limiting your intake of coffee and alcohol

- Chewing sugar-free gum, especially when your mouth is dry

Remember, sometimes bad breath can be caused by underlying dental conditions such as gum disease. Should your symptoms persist, please give us a call to schedule an appointment for a check up.
