Mouth Guards

Night Guards

Many people clench or grind their teeth during their sleep or in the day without even knowing it. If you frequently wake up with a sore jaw, a dull headache or tooth pain, you might be suffering from a condition called bruxism.

Bruxism, or teeth grinding, can be caused by stress, or even when the upper and lower teeth do not fit properly in an ideal bite amongst other reasons. The grinding of teeth causes damage to the surfaces of the teeth and even to existing restorations. Over time if not treated, this can cause teeth to chip and crack which can lead to other dental complications.

Fortunately, there are several ways to alleviate the effects of bruxism. One of the most common options is a night guard. A night guard is a custom-made appliance that is molded to fit your teeth, and that is typically worn while sleeping through the night. The nightguard can also be worn when there may be unconscious clenching through the day, such as when exercising. The night guard acts as a protective barrier and absorbs the pressure and wear that is typically applied to the adjacent teeth when grinding.

Sports Guards

Another type of mouth guard is that of a sports guard. In sporting activities, there is a great need to protect one’s teeth. Many athletes know that with any sport comes the risk of injury to the teeth, lips, cheek and tongue. This is especially true for contact sports such as football, hockey, baseball etc. Athletes are thus recommended to always wear a sports guard.

A properly fitted mouth guard will stay in place while it is worn, making it easy to talk and breathe. Here at Dentudio Dentists - Richmond dental clinic, we provide our patients with custom fitted mouth guards. Custom fitted mouth guards provide the best protection and comfort for an athlete.

If you think that you need a night guard or a sports guard, give our Richmond dental office a call to schedule an appointment today!
