1) Stick to your routine

When summer comes around, all our routines established through the year seem to fly out the window. It happens to everyone of us. Vacations, later bedtime hours, the summer heat put together make for the lack of routine. Although summer is a time for fun, one important routine that cannot afford to be compromised is your oral hygiene routine!

No matter the time of the year, sticking to a regimented schedule can prevent cavities and oral complications. Slacking off on your oral hygiene routine even for a couple of days, not to mention weeks and months, can cause damage to your teeth and oral health. Brushing your teeth twice per day and flossing on a daily basis are essential for your overall health and well being.

2) Protect your lips

It is almost natural instinct to apply sunscreen and sunblock before taking off and spending time under the hot sun, but many seem to forget to protect their lips as well! Our lips are susceptible to burning, which over time can cause a variety of issues including skin cancer. If you plan on spending a lot of time in the sun, it is important that you take care of your lips as well with an application of SPF 15 or higher lip balm.

3) Stay hydrated

As the days get warmer, it is common for many to indulge in sweet and cold drinks and snacks throughout the day to combat the heat. Children and adult alike look forward to the many sweet treats that summer has to offer! However, it is no secret that sugar and acid can do serious damage to your teeth. It is important to try and limit your intake of these sugary snacks, and when possible, replace them with healthier alternatives.

It is also important to stay hydrated during the summer. Apart from its other benefits, water has great benefits for your oral hygiene. With every sip, water washes away leftover food and residue that cavity-causing bacteria are looking for. Water also dilutes the acids produced by bacteria in your mouth. Water can go a long way toward keeping your smile healthy!

4) Schedule your back to school dental appointments early

After the overindulgence of all the sweet treats throughout the summer, it does no harm to schedule a cleaning and check up for your children before they return to school. Scheduling an appointment early can ensure that you have an appointment time that works best for you, as well as to avoid the August rush.

If any problems are discovered during your child's dental visit, they can quickly be taken care of so as to avoid having to miss a class or two when school resumes!

5) Keep your dentist's contact information handy

With the heat that it brings, summer entails lots of fun and adventure. Many people spend summer days by the pool, camping, or even at a sporting event. Unfortunately, summer seems to bring about a higher chance of dental emergencies! Be it a slip by the pool, a tumble at the playground or perhaps too much sugar that caused a tooth ache, we all know that dental emergencies are scary and can be very painful.

It is important to keep your dentist's contact information handy for when such a situation arises. Here at Dentudio Dentists, our summer hours are as per regular hours. We are open 7 days a week and are here to assist should an emergency come along! If a dental emergency were to happen after hours, do contact us at 604 370 1450 to speak to one of our dentists as soon as possible!

With all these tips, we hope you have a great summer!
