What is composite bonding?

Dental composite bonding is a safe, strategic procedure that uses a type of dental material – in this case, composite resin to reshape misaligned, injured, or decayed teeth.

Bonding is an easy treatment that requires little if any advanced preparation and usually no enamel reduction.

It’s tooth-colored resin material (a durable plastic material) is applied and hardened with a special light, which ultimately “bonds” the material to the tooth to restore or improve person’s smile.

It can be used as a cosmetic solution to chipped teeth, gapped teeth and staining in both teeth and fillings. Unlike porcelain veneer placement, which can take more than two visits, composite resin bonding can be completed in one appointment.

How are composite bonding done?

During the appointment, your dentist will first prep the tooth being worked on. Your dentist will slightly roughen the tooth surface and then apply the bonding, shape it, and cure (harden) it with a special light. The tooth is then trimmed and polished. Stain-resistant bonding material is chosen from a color wheel of shades in order to match yours closely.

What can composite bonding used for?
