Dental Implants

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are inserted into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. Implants are a popular choice with patients because they closely mimic the look and function of real teeth. They are an attractive alternative to dentures and bridges.

After the implant is inserted into the jawbone, it is fitted with an artificial tooth (the crown) through the use of an abutment. A dental implant is designed to last many years, but poor oral hygiene can shorten its lifespan. Just like real teeth, good oral hygiene is crucial.

Implant Procedures

The procedure of dental implants is typically split up into a couple of phases. Firstly, your dentist will examine your teeth and take x-rays to find out if you are a suitable candidate for an implant. Once you have been deemed a suitable candidate, your dentist will begin with the first stage of the surgery. Provided that everything is alright, your dentist will place the implant into the jawbone beneath the gum tissue. Some people require procedures such as the extraction (if the tooth is still there) or even a sinus lift before this phase.

The second stage of the surgery takes place a couple of months after the first. This is because the surrounding tissue needs to heal. During this stage, your dentist will attach an abutment to the implant. The abutment is a post that connects the replacement tooth to the implant.

The last stage of the surgery is when an artificial tooth, better known as a crown, is made an attached to the abutment.

Checkups will be scheduled after the procedure to ensure that the implant is working properly. Good oral hygiene is necessary to ensure that the implants do not fail.

FAQ

Will implants affect me later if I have medical scans?

Titanium implants should be no problem with an MRI. An MRI uses a powerful magnet to scan the human body. It is a problem with things containing ferrous metals(i.e. iron and steel). Implants and the restorative materials on them typically contain non-ferrous materials only( titanium, gold, platinum, etc.) The one possible area might be if you have a removable prosthesis that uses magnets for retention. It is probably a good idea to take out any removable prostheses(dentures, bridges, etc.) before an MRI and leave them outside the MRI room.
