What is a Filling?
A filling is used to treat or “fill” a small hole or cavity created by tooth decay. Most fillings today are made from resin composite and are tooth coloured for a more natural look, compared to the old silver looking amalgam fillings that contained mercury.
If tooth decay goes untreated it can lead to discomfort, pain, and loss of tooth.
What Causes Tooth Decay?
When bacteria from our mouth and dental plaque interact with sugars or starches, an acid is created, and if sugars and starches are eaten regularly more acid will build up and break down the enamel. If more minerals are lost than created as a natural recovery, then a cavity is likely to form and will require treatment.
