What is Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontic treatment benefits people of all ages who have crooked or crowded teeth. Orthodontics works to align your teeth for a healthier and stronger smile. Aside from making your teeth straight, treated teeth are easier to clean and less likely to get injured or decay. The device, such as braces or Invisalign work by gently putting pressure on your teeth, pushing them into their proper place.

Orthodontics may also be for you if your bite does not align when chewing. This can lead to uneven wear and tear on certain teeth and eventually make it difficult to chew.

Types of Braces

Metal Braces
Metal braces are the most common types of braces. They function with glued-on brackets, stainless steel bands, wires, and ligatures which use tension to gently pull your teeth into proper alignment.
These braces are visible when you smile but you can show your personality with colours. Just ask your dentist which colours are available.

Ceramic Braces

These ceramic braces function in the same manner as metal braces, the only difference is that the ligatures, brackets, and wires are all tooth coloured.
The braces are still visible, but they’re less noticeable. These braces can also be more challenging due to the fragility when compared to the metal version.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces also function like metal braces, but the selling feature is that they are affixed to the back of your teeth. Lingual braces are a great option for “invisible braces” as products like clear aligners are still visible.

Self-ligating Braces

Self-ligating braces look and function similarly to metal braces, but instead of elastic bands (ligatures) these braces are specifically designed to hold the archwire in place.

Clear Aligners

These orthodontic devices are sometimes called invisible, and are definitely less noticeable . These aligners use a series of custom fit trays to gently shift your teeth into proper position over time. Ask us about the popular brand, Invisalign®.
