Dental bonding is a safe, strategic procedure that uses a type of dental material – in this case, composite resin to reshape misaligned, injured, or decayed teeth. Bonding is an easy treatment that requires little if any advanced preparation and usually no enamel reduction. It’s tooth-colored resin material (a durable plastic material) is applied and hardened with a special light, which ultimately “bonds” the material to the tooth to restore or improve person’s smile. It can be used as a cosmetic solution to chipped teeth, gapped teeth and staining in both teeth and fillings. Unlike porcelain veneer placement, which can take more than two visits, composite resin bonding can be completed in one appointment.

During the appointment, your dentist will first prep the tooth being worked on. Your dentist will slightly roughen the tooth surface and then apply the bonding, shape it, and cure (harden) it with a special light. The tooth is then trimmed and polished. Stain-resistant bonding material is chosen from a color wheel of shades in order to match yours closely.
Dental bonding can be used to treat the following:
To repair decayed teeth (composite resins are used to fill cavities)
To repair chipped or cracked teeth
To improve the appearance of discolored teeth
To close spaces between teeth
To make teeth look longer
To change the shape of teeth
As a cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings
To protect a portion of the tooth’s root that has been exposed when gums recede
