You are what you eat!
Did you know that one of the first areas to decline when your diet is less than ideal is your oral health? We all know that sugary foods such as candy and soda contribute to tooth decay. However, even though we know so, many of us can't help but indulge in sugary foods from time to time! But fret not!
Indulging in a sugary snack occasionally can be alright if you take good care of your teeth. Be sure to rinse your mouth with water after consuming anything sugary, and to brush when you can. Ideally, brushing for 2 minutes, 2 times a day is best. Be sure to floss at night too!
Sugary foods aside, here are 3 other foods that are good for your teeth!
Cheese is a great food for your teeth! It is high in calcium and protein, and contains nutrients that strengthen tooth enamel. A study published in the May/June 2013 issue of General Dentistry, the journal of the American Academy of General Dentistry, reported at EurekAlert! found that eating cheese raised the pH in the subjects' mouths and lowered their risk of tooth decay.
Just like cheese, yogurt is high in calcium and protein and is thus great for your teeth! The probiotics found in yogurt can also benefit your gums. Think about it this way: the good bacteria will outnumber the bad! However, be careful with your selection of yogurt. Many selections of yogurt these days are flavoured and high in sugar. Be sure to choose something with no added sugar.
Carrots are crunchy and full of fiber. Eating a handful of raw carrots at the end of the meal increases saliva production in your mouth, which reduces your risk of cavities. Along with being high in fiber, carrots are also a great source of vitamin A.
