What is Diastema?

Diastema- when there is extra space/gap between two or more teeth.

Children usually experience diastema when their first primary teeth fall out, although this issue will most likely resolve on its own when their permanent teeth erupt. For adults however, diastema is more commonly seen on the front two teeth in the upper jaw area.

There are multiple reasons as to why diastema may occur:

  1. Difference in tooth size

  2. Missing teeth

  3. Oversized labial frenum (tissue that connects from the inside of the lip to the gum tissue where the upper two front teeth are located)

  4. Oral alignment issues

Treatment options?

  • Keep the diastema

  • Orthodontic treatment

  • Porcelain veneers

  • Crown + bridge

  • Implants

  • Frenectomy
